Antonio Conte wants to teach his Tottenham players to take responsibility and has also said that their tight-knit family group is not enough to win.
Having won twice and drawn once under the Italian, Spurs lost their first match under him in disastrous fashion with an embarrassing 2-1 defeat at NS Mura in the Europa Conference League on Thursday evening.
Ahead of the dreadful performance against the competition’s lowest ranked team, Conte had hinted at some of the changes he knows he needs to make at the club in the months ahead.
“It is important to have many leaders. Harry [Kane] for sure is one. Then we have our captain [Hugo Lloris],” he said.
“This team is very young. I know we have to build many leaders and to work in this aspect.
“The players are young but at the same time it is important to take responsibility, but I am also here to teach this aspect to my players and as more time passes we will improve in many aspects.”
Tottenham’s squad has long been considered a tight-knit group of players, with former boss Mauricio Pochettino having cultivated a family feel at the club.
Multiple title winner Conte explained that having that base is an important start but more is needed to achieve success.
“These are a group of players that are sure to be solid. Very compact and this is important when you want to build something important,” he explained.
“A group of players that enjoy to stay together. That is very important, I found a family here, but that is not enough to win.
“It’s important but we need to improve in many aspects and we are working on this. We have just started our path, we want to improve together, I am sure time will give us results.”
Conte apologised to the fans on Thursday night following the display in Maribor and he wants to build a connection between this team and the supporters.
During the victory against Leeds United on the previous Sunday, the Spurs boss could be seen whipping up the crowd around him to increase the noise.

“We need this passion, we need to create this type of atmosphere,” he said. “We have to know that a lot of the situations depend on ourselves.
“To play in our stadium is fantastic but at the same time our fans have to put pressure on the teams, they have to feel that playing Tottenham in our stadium is not easy.
“Fortress, I like this word. To become a fortress for us, it’s right and I want to do this together.”
The man who scored Tottenham’s goal in Slovenia was Harry Kane and while Conte wants more goals from the England captain, he has been impressed with the player he has found in the flesh.
“I must be honest, Harry, it’s important to score but if I am to judge Kane’s performance against Leeds and Everton, I am very happy,” he said.
“He is a striker with great talent, a world class striker but at the same time it is very difficult to find a player with his talent that works like him and he is a fantastic player and I am very happy to be his coach.
“Outside you can speak about the player to say he is good, but only when you train them can you understand the value of the player and Kane is a top, top player.”
Conte will be hoping to get Tottenham back on track as they make the trip to Burnley on Sunday afternoon.
“We have another important game away at Burnley. I know the ground, I know the atmosphere we are going to face, but we must be ready to face it,” he said.
“You must know everything about your opponent, they are working with a really good manager for many, many years and this is important for them.
“I know the atmosphere will be very hot and we must be ready to fight and give everything to try and get three points.”
